Sleep Studies

Measuring what happens to breathing and oxygen during sleep, to explain what happens during the day.

Loud snoring, pauses in breathing witnessed by someone else, waking unrefreshed, and daytime sleepiness are the usual reasons for a sleep study. The most common condition it identifies is obstructive sleep apnoea, where the airway repeatedly narrows during sleep and interrupts both breathing and rest.

This matters beyond tiredness. Untreated sleep apnoea is associated with raised blood pressure, poorer glucose control and cardiovascular risk, which is why it sits so naturally alongside metabolic care rather than separately from it.

Why it might be recommended

  • Loud snoring, particularly with pauses noticed by someone else
  • Waking unrefreshed however long you sleep
  • Daytime sleepiness that affects driving or work
  • Blood pressure that will not settle on treatment
  • Diabetes with glucose that is difficult to control
  • Morning headaches or poor concentration

What to expect on the day

  • Breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate and movement are recorded overnight
  • Depending on what is needed, this may be done at home or in a monitored setting
  • The equipment is worn during normal sleep, nothing is invasive
  • Your clinic will advise which type of study is appropriate

This page describes the procedure in general. The preparation for your own appointment is confirmed by the clinic, because it depends on what is being looked for and on your own medical history.
